Dr Nikolas Thomopoulos is an Associate Professor in Transport at the University of Surrey, where he leads the Sustainable Transport & Mobility Programme of the Institute for Sustainability. He is affiliated with the Department of Tourism and Transport within the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences, and contributes to several research centers including the Centre for Sustainability and Wellbeing in the Visitor Economy and the Institute for Sustainability.

Dr Thomopoulos' research focuses on the wider impacts of autonomous, automated and electric vehicles, managing transport to improve tourist wellbeing, data and privacy management policies, lifelong community mobility, and urban mobility innovation. His work bridges transportation engineering, sustainability science, and tourism management, with particular emphasis on how technological innovations in transport can contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. He examines both the technical aspects of new mobility solutions and their societal implications, ensuring a holistic approach to sustainable transport systems.
His publication record demonstrates consistent focus on sustainable transport solutions, with recent work analyzing electric vehicle adoption in China, active travel infrastructure, and the sustainability implications of automated and connected transport. These publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary approach that combines transportation engineering with social science perspectives to address complex mobility challenges.
As an academic leader, Dr Thomopoulos has received numerous honors including being a Marie Curie fellow and a Fellow of the Regional Studies Association. His leadership extends to:

With over 15 years of teaching experience in the UK at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, Dr Thomopoulos currently supervises three Post-Graduate Researchers. He has secured funding from various sources including Horizon Europe, H2020, and UK research councils for projects such as R-Map, WE-TRANSFORM, and Ready2Drive. His consultancy work has informed strategic planning for organizations like Network Rail.
Dr Thomopoulos leads the Sustainable Transport & Mobility Programme at the Institute for Sustainability, collaborating with international partners across 42 countries through WISE-ACT. His work with the Surrey Living Lab has directly influenced local active travel policies, and he serves as the Lead Academic Integrity Officer for SHTM and School Research Seminar Series Coordinator.
