Dr. Nikolaos Koumoutzis is an Associate Professor at the School of Law, Department of Law, University of Cyprus. His research focuses on the intersection of Islamic Law (Sharia), European Human Rights Law, and the legal status of Muslim minorities in secular states.
- Education: PhD and Bachelor in Law from the University of Athens; Master in Droit Privé from the University Bordeaux I.
His work examines the application of Islamic family law in Greece through mufti courts, the recognition of gender identity without marriage requirements, and the harmonization of religious legal systems with European Convention on Human Rights (ECtHR) standards. Recent publications analyze surrogacy regulations and the consensual accommodation of Sharia law in Greece.
His research outputs (35 total) span topics like Sharia law, Human Rights, ECtHR jurisprudence, and legal pluralism. He has served as a scientific editor for Law & Economy (P.N. Sakkoulas) and practiced law from 2001 to 2013.
