Dr. Nikolai Gourof is an Affiliate Researcher and Strife Operations Manager at King’s College London’s Department of War Studies, School of Security Studies. He holds a PhD in War Studies, Modern History, and the History of Military Thought from King’s College London. His primary research focuses on military thought and practice in the early modern/industrial era, particularly in Habsburg/Bourbon Spain and its European adversaries, with extra-European interests in Russia and Japan. He critically examines the interplay between military treatises and historical practices, as well as the role of 'lessons of war' in shaping military evolution.
Education: BA (Honours) in History from Royal Holloway University of London, MA (Distinction) in History of Warfare from King’s College London.
His broader research spans warfare’s relationship with state organization, empire-building, intellectual frameworks for ideological continuity, and the role of art/literature in war’s portrayal. He explores politicized history in contemporary Russia and post-Soviet states. Dr. Gourof has taught military history at King’s since 2012 and is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
He has served on Strife’s editorial board since its inception,曾 as its first Managing Editor, and currently oversees operations and book reviews. His grants include the Schilizzi Foundation (2011–2012) and the Rothschild Scholarship.
