Nikolai DeMartini is an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering. He serves as Director of the Pulp & Paper Centre, focusing on the role and fate of inorganics in biomass processing industries.
Research Interests: His work investigates how inorganic elements impact energy efficiency and emissions in biomass conversion processes. Key areas include:
- Scaling in spent liquor evaporators
- Trace metals in alkaline solutions
- Crystallization behavior of salts
- Thermal conversion of biomass/hydrogen flames
Projects: Current initiatives involve CFD modeling of smelt dissolving tanks, biomass flame analysis in lime kilns, and soap recovery optimization.
