Prof. Nikola Pernar is a distinguished academic at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Department of Forestry. He holds the rank of Professor and has over 39 years of professional experience since joining the faculty in 1986. His academic progression includes roles from Assistant (1986–1997) to Senior Assistant (1997–1998), Assistant Professor (1998–2004), Associate Professor (2004–2008), Full Professor (2008–2013), and Distinguished Professor since 2013.
His research focuses on soil degradation, soil protection, and organic matter dynamics in forest ecosystems. Notable projects include studies on heavy metal contamination in Medvednica Mountain soils, soil carbon sequestration in Đurđevac sands, and vegetation-pedological interactions on Biokovo and Bilogora mountains. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications, emphasizing soil science, environmental chemistry, and sustainable land management.
Prof. Pernar teaches courses such as Soil Science, Remediation of Degraded Land, and Soil Management, delivered in Croatian and English. He has contributed to national initiatives like Croatia’s Soil Monitoring Programme and the Close to Nature Forestry study programme, emphasizing eco-friendly practices. His work often bridges ecological, geological, and anthropogenic factors affecting forest soils, with applications in conservation and land rehabilitation.
