Niko Heeren is a Lecturer at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering at ETH Zürich. His research focuses on sustainable construction, life cycle assessment (LCA), and the environmental impacts of building materials. He leads projects on building stock modeling, greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, and circular economy frameworks for construction materials. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including GIS and probabilistic modeling, to address urban sustainability challenges.
He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering from ETH Zürich (2017), where he developed methodologies for prospective modeling of construction material flows. His research outputs include the EUBUCCO database for European building stocks and frameworks for assessing criticality of construction resources.
Recent studies highlight his contributions to policy-oriented analyses, such as evaluating future sectoral changes in construction materials and climate adaptation strategies for Swiss buildings. He collaborates internationally on urban sustainability initiatives, including the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and climate resilience frameworks.
