Niklaus Kuster serves as a Lecturer in the history of spirituality and Franciscan spirituality at the University of Lucerne and the Philosophical-Theological College Münster (PTH Münster), with extensive teaching experience across European academic and religious institutions since 1998.
Education:
- 1982-1984: Theology studies at University of Fribourg and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts; Degree in Theology with Church History thesis (awarded 1991)
- 1986-1991: Theology studies at Universities of Lucerne and Fribourg; Licentiate thesis in Church History
- 1992-1996: Doctoral studies at Pontifical Ateneo Antonianum (Rome); Dissertation on founder of Swiss Caritas
His research centers on historical and theological dimensions of spirituality, with specialized expertise in Franciscan traditions. Kuster examines the evolution of spiritual practices within Catholicism, particularly their intersection with social thought and institutional development through rigorous historical analysis of primary Franciscan texts and movements.
Academic appointments include 25 years at University of Lucerne's RPI (1998-2023 for Church History; current spirituality courses since 2019/2022), continuous lecturing at PTH Münster since 1998 (interrupted 2009-2009), and significant roles at Venice's Laurentianum (2002-2009), Saint-Maurice's trimestre franciscain (2004-2014), and Madrid's Escuela Superior de Estudios Franciscanos (since 2005).
