Nikki Giovanni is a University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech, where she has been teaching since 1987. Born on June 7, 1943, in Knoxville, Tennessee, she is one of America's most widely read poets and a literary giant who has created her own path in the world of literature and academia.
Her research interests span poetry, children's literature, African American literature, and social justice. Giovanni's work consistently explores themes of identity, race, and the human experience, with particular emphasis on the Black experience in America. She is especially passionate about children's literature, which she considers 'the most important literature, period,' built on folk literature traditions that have carried cultural knowledge through generations.
Giovanni's publications reveal a career-long engagement with cultural identity, social justice, and the power of storytelling. Her work moves fluidly between personal reflection, historical commentary, and social critique, often weaving together the personal and political in ways that resonate across generations. She has been particularly influential in documenting and celebrating African American cultural traditions through poetry and prose.

As an educator, Giovanni emphasizes the importance of finding one's authentic voice. She encourages her students to 'have faith in their own voice, to have trust in their own voice,' while understanding that artistic impact often extends far beyond an artist's lifetime. Her teaching philosophy reflects her belief that 'if writing is what you feel is your calling, you have to understand that you probably won't ever get any credit for it. It'll be 200 years before anybody knows what you did.'
