Professor Nikki Cotterill is a registered nurse and Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, holding the position of Professor in Continence Care at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) within the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences (HAS). She leads the Bladder and Bowel CONfidence Health Integration Team (BABCON), collaborating with institutions like Bristol Health Partners, North Bristol NHS Trust, and the University of Bristol. Her work focuses on improving continence care through research, education, and policy advocacy.
Education: Nikki Cotterill holds a PhD, BSc(Hons) in Nursing, and is a Florence Nightingale Foundation Leadership Scholar. Her qualifications emphasize clinical practice and academic rigor in healthcare.
Research Interests: Her primary areas include improving outcomes for individuals with incontinence, qualitative studies within randomized controlled trials, and developing patient-reported outcome measures. She employs mixed methodologies, including co-production with patients and public partners. Notable projects include the PRIME pharmacy service initiative, the CONfidence app for bladder/bowel health, and studies on pandemic impacts (EPICCC-19).
Grants & Supervision: Currently supervising three PhD students funded by the Abbeyfield Research Foundation (VOICE project on care home continence care), ERIC (POTTY project on early years bladder/bowel health), and the CoV-LUTS+ study on long-term symptoms post-COVID. Grants include NIHR ARC West funding for collaborative research.
Labs/Teams: BABCON team, leading system-wide continence care initiatives such as the CONfidence app and public toilet access advocacy. Collaborative networks include NHS trusts, charities, and academic partnerships.
