Niki Flaum

Niki Flaum is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in the Division of Cancer Sciences at the University of Manchester, with research interests focused on early detection of breast cancer, breast cancer in young women, and risk prediction of breast cancer. She also works as a medical oncology specialty registrar at the Christie hospital in Manchester.

Dr. Flaum completed her PhD titled "Assessment of Predisposition to Familial Non-mucinous Epithelial Ovarian Cancer" at the University of Manchester in August 2023. Her educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine (MbBCh) from Cardiff University (2010) and a Bachelor of Science in Physiology (intercalated) from Cardiff University (2008), followed by a Speciality Certificate Examination in Medical Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians (2017).

Her research spans several critical areas in oncology, with a particular focus on:

• Breast cancer and ovarian cancer genetics
• Cancer risk prediction models
• Early detection strategies for cancer
• Genomic aspects of cancer predisposition
• Financial toxicity in cancer care

Dr. Flaum's recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on genetic factors in ovarian cancer, particularly examining BRCA1/2 testing protocols, the role of BRIP1 and MSH2 genes in cancer predisposition, and the development of instruments to measure financial impacts of cancer treatment. Her work often involves large-scale genetic testing and analysis to refine cancer screening guidelines.

She has been recognized for her contributions to cancer research with the Association of Cancer Physicians President's Prize in 2024.

Dr. Flaum is currently involved as a Co-Investigator in the project "Developing targeted strategies for precision breast cancer prevention" (2025-2028), which aims to advance personalized approaches to breast cancer prevention.
