Dr. Nikhil Chawla is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Hospital. He serves as the Assistant Program Director for the Yale Anesthesiology residency program and Director for Quality and Safety in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. His clinical expertise spans perioperative anesthesia, critical care, and point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) applications. Dr. Chawla completed his MBBS at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (2006), followed by residency at Drexel University and a critical care fellowship at the University of Florida. He joined Yale in 2014. His research focuses on ultrasound integration in medical education, perioperative care optimization, and anesthetic techniques for specialized procedures like electroconvulsive therapy. Notable contributions include advancing POCUS nomenclature standards and developing opioid-free anesthesia protocols for living donor nephrectomies. He has also contributed to understanding glucagon-induced hypertensive emergencies and carbon monoxide's effects on coagulation. Dr. Chawla’s educational initiatives include implementing a residency ultrasound curriculum as part of his Medical Education Fellowship (completed 2016).
