Nikander Strelsky was a pioneering professor and founder of Vassar College's Russian program. Born in 1893 in Kharkov, Ukraine, he earned degrees from the Kharkov School of Agriculture and the Polytechnical Institute of Kiev. After serving in the Imperial Russian Army during WWI and surviving the Russian Revolution, he fled to Constantinople and later emigrated to the U.S. in 1923. Despite battling illness, he became Vassar's first Russian instructor in 1934, advancing language education and Slavic studies. He authored seminal works like *Saltykov and the Russian Squire* (1940) and *Russian Reader* (1945), which became foundational texts. His legacy includes expanding the college’s Slavic library collection, and a memorial Crimean tree planted in his honor.
His academic contributions spanned teaching, translation, and scholarship. He designed courses on Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Russian drama, fostering Vassar’s reputation in Slavic studies. Beyond academia, he collaborated with theater productions and cultural initiatives, embodying a 'universal man' as celebrated by peers.
