Nika Elder is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern/Contemporary Art at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on North American art from the colonial period to the present, emphasizing the politics of representation through intersections of painting, material culture, and visual culture. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2013) with a certificate in Media and Modernity, an M.A. from Princeton, and a B.A. in art history and studio art from Wellesley College.
Her work has been supported by institutions such as the Amon Carter Museum, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She has taught at Vassar College, Rutgers University, and in the Princeton Writing Program. Current research projects include a book on William Harnett’s still lifes and analyses of Lorna Simpson’s and John Singleton Copley’s works.
