Nik Wiman is an Associate Professor and Extension Orchard Specialist in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU), based at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center. His work focuses on integrated pest management (IPM), biological control, and sustainable orcharding practices, particularly in hazelnuts and tree fruits. He earned a BS in Biology and MS in Entomology from Montana State University, followed by a PhD in Entomology from Washington State University (2011). Before joining OSU, he conducted research on tree fruit pests and biological control in Wenatchee, WA.
Education:
- PhD in Entomology, Washington State University (2011)
- MS in Entomology, Montana State University (2001)
- BS in Biology, Montana State University (1998)
Research Interests:
Wiman’s research addresses emerging pests and diseases in hazelnuts, including eastern filbert blight (EFB), brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), and flatheaded borers. He studies pest population dynamics, biological control agents (e.g., Trissolcus japonicus wasps), and sustainable management strategies. His team also explores hazelnut nutrition, irrigation, and cider apple production.
Publications & Outreach:
He has authored numerous extension guides and peer-reviewed articles on pest management, including guides for hazelnuts, apples, cherries, and walnuts. His work emphasizes practical solutions for growers, such as the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug management resources and EFB-resistant hazelnut varieties.
Awards:
- Recipient of the International IPM Award for the StopBMSB program (2015)
- Multitude of student awards and research recognitions from ESA and other organizations
Advising & Grants:
He advises graduate students in Entomology and Horticulture, focusing on applied research. His lab collaborates with industry stakeholders to address challenges like EFB virulence shifts and invasive pest spread.
Labs & Teams:
The Wiman Lab leads projects on hazelnut IPM, samurai wasp establishment, and cider apple development. The lab maintains active outreach via Facebook groups (e.g., Hazelnut Extension), listservs, and experimental orchards.
