Niina Putkonen is a University Lecturer at the Department of Education, University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Humanities and Social Sciences Education (HuSoEd) program. She holds a doctoral researcher role in the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society, and Culture. Her work focuses on religious and worldview education, particularly Islamic religious education in Finnish public schools.
She leads and participates in projects like the KUPERA project (2018–2021), exploring cultural, worldview, and language awareness in basic education. Her research emphasizes intercultural education, dialogue in religious education, and teacher perceptions of religious diversity.
Notable publications include studies on Islamic religious education in Finland, comparative analyses of religious textbooks, and the role of worldview education in fostering cultural competence. Putkonen has been awarded the 2022 Study of the U.S. Institute for Scholars Grant for research on religious pluralism.
Her activities include organizing conferences like the UN World Interfaith Harmony Week event and presenting at international forums such as JURE 2024. She actively engages in teacher training and curriculum development related to religious and worldview education.
