Marjaana Kavonius works as a Lecturer at the University of Helsinki's Department of Educational Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences Education (HuSoEd). She serves as a supervisor in the Doctoral Program in School, Education, Society and Culture and holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree alongside a Master of Theology, with qualifications as a subject teacher in religion, philosophy of life, and psychology.

Her research focuses on worldview education, educational sciences, religious studies, and curriculum development. She explores didactic relationships between religion and philosophy of life, perspective education, and intercultural communication. Her work addresses challenges in handling difficult topics and reforming educational systems.
Marjaana received the Finnish Research Association for Subject Didactics' doctoral dissertation award in 2022. She has contributed to media discussions about educational reform and worldview integration in schools, appearing in multiple press engagements since 2021.
