Nigel Smith is the William and Annie S. Paton Foundation Professor of Ancient and Modern Literature at Princeton University's Department of English. He previously held a position at the University of Oxford before joining Princeton in 1999. His research focuses on early modern literature (especially 17th-century studies), poetry, and interdisciplinary connections between literature and fields like art, politics, religion, and music. He co-directs the Center for the Study of Books and Media at Princeton.

His research interests span radical literature, women’s writing, censorship, and the early modern public sphere. Notable works include Andrew Marvell: The Chameleon (TLS Book of the Year 2010) and Is Milton Better than Shakespeare? (2008). He has received TLS recognitions for his scholarly works and actively engages in editorial projects like the Journal of George Fox and Ranter Pamphlets. His teaching covers British Literature, Contemporary Culture, and Film Studies.
