Professor Nigel Harwood holds the position of Professor in Applied Linguistics at the School of English, University of Sheffield. Previously, he served as a Reader (2014–2020) and held roles at the University of Essex including Teaching Fellow, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer. His career began with seven years teaching English as a foreign language in Europe. He is co-editor of the journal English for Specific Purposes and serves on editorial boards for multiple academic journals.
Harwood's research focuses on academic writing, English for specific/academic purposes, and proofreading ethics. He has published extensively on citation practices, textbook design, and international students' dissertation supervision experiences. Notable works include Experiencing Master’s Supervision: Perspectives of International Students and their Supervisors (2017) and Proofreading and Editing in Student and Research Publication Contexts (2024). His work often employs qualitative methods like interviews and textual analysis.
Teaching activities include leading modules on research methods, writing pedagogy, and curriculum design in the MA in Applied Linguistics with TESOL program. He actively mentors PhD students exploring TESOL textbooks, proofreading ethics, and academic literacy development. His research highlights ethical challenges in proofreading and the enculturation of international students into academic practices.
Harwood’s academic contributions span over three decades, with a strong emphasis on demystifying academic writing practices through corpus-driven approaches and critical pragmatics.
