Niels Peter Skou

Niels Peter Skou is an Associate Professor in the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Faculty of Humanities. Skou holds a Cand. mag. in Idehistory and Musicology and a Ph.D. in Design History. His educational background informs his interdisciplinary approach to design as a cultural and historical phenomenon.

His research interests include Design Studies, Design History, Sustainable Design, Anthropocene and Design, Scandinavian Design, and Cultural Narratives in Design. He explores how design shapes and is shaped by cultural identities, ecological challenges, and historical legacies.

The analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent thematic trajectory: the role of design in constructing meaning within ecological and cultural contexts. His work engages with topics such as rural energy landscapes, the mythologies of Scandinavian design, and the transformation of natural spaces into designed environments. His public engagement includes media contributions and guest lectures on the cultural significance of design, particularly around historical movements like PH (Poul Henningsen) and their contemporary relevance.
