Niels Halama

Prof. Dr. Niels Halama is a W3 Professor and head of the Department of Tumor Immunology and Tumor Immunotherapy at the Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology (HI-TRON) in Mainz. He is also a senior physician in the Clinical Cancer Research Program for Colorectal Cancer and a certified clinical investigator in oncology, clinical trials, and medical devices. His academic affiliation includes Heidelberg University, where he completed his doctorate and habilitation.

His primary research interests lie in tumor immunology and tumor immunotherapy, with a strong translational focus on solid tumors such as colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancers, and malignant melanoma. His work integrates immunological biomarker identification, imaging technologies, and high-throughput processing to understand tumor inflammation and improve therapeutic outcomes.

Prof. Halama is actively involved in graduate and undergraduate medical education at the University of Mainz. He leads a research laboratory focused on translational immunotherapy and has previously headed the Department of Translational Immunotherapy at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) from 2019 to 2023.

He is recognized for his academic contributions, including being awarded the title of Associate Professor by Heidelberg University in 2022. His professional memberships include:
