Niels Chr. Hansen is an Associate Professor of Music at the Department of Communication and Psychology, Aalborg University, and concurrently serves as Associate Professor of Music Theory, History, and Analysis at the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus/Aalborg, Denmark. He leads the Cognitive Musicology and Performance Science Lab (CoMPS), jointly operated by both institutions, and is an Associate Editor for Performance Science at Frontiers in Psychology.
His research integrates cognitive musicology, performance science, and music psychology, with emphasis on:
- Cross-cultural relationships between music and speech
- Cognitive mechanisms in music perception and performance
- Social dynamics of group musical activities
- Technology-driven applications for health and exercise
Recent publications (2025) demonstrate a focus on large-scale, collaborative studies using registered reports and meta-analyses to investigate music-speech parallels, synchronization-based social bonding, and personalized music systems for physical activity. This work spans cognitive science, linguistics, and health technology domains.
He directs the CoMPS Lab, advancing interdisciplinary research at the intersection of music theory, experimental psychology, and computational methods.
