Niels Blom serves as a Lecturer in Criminology at City St George's, University of London, specializing in Social Statistics/Criminology and functioning as a core member of the Violence, Health, and Society Consortium (VISION). He leads research projects examining domestic violence and abuse in relation to labour market outcomes and health consequences while actively accepting PhD students for supervision.
His research program centers on statistical analyses of survey and administrative data to investigate (domestic) violence and abuse, socioeconomic and health inequalities, gender dynamics, family structures/transitions, and economic inequality. Key findings demonstrate how different types of intimate partner violence distinctly impact victim-survivors' physical health, well-being, and employment outcomes, with domestic abuse frequently causing job loss and work absence dependent on violence type and frequency. His work extends to adolescent domestic abuse predictors/consequences and victim-survivor service utilization patterns.
Blom's recent publications reveal critical trends in violence measurement methodologies across data sources, highlighting discrepancies between survey and administrative records that affect violence quantification and gendering. His studies demonstrate how ethnicity representation flaws in UK statistics perpetuate violence inequalities and how job loss due to domestic abuse varies by violence typology and severity.
As a core VISION Consortium member, Blom maintains active stakeholder engagement in his research while supervising PhD candidates. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing poverty, inequality, and health through violence prevention frameworks.
