معرفی
Nicolle Barbieri is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Her work focuses on Extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC), including avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC), uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC), and neonatal meningitis E. coli (NMEC). She investigates virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance, and pathogenesis mechanisms using molecular biology techniques. Her research emphasizes poultry isolates (broilers, turkeys, layers) and explores biofilm formation and links between poultry pathogens and human health.
Education
- PhD (2014): Cell and Molecular Biology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
- MS (2010): Cell and Molecular Biology, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
- BS (2007): Pharmacy, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Research Interests
- Poultry microbiology and foodborne pathogens
- ExPEC virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance
- Colistin resistance mechanisms (mcr-1 to mcr-8)
- APEC molecular diagnostics and host-bacteria interactions
- Biofilm formation in pathogenic E. coli
Publications
Her research outputs focus on APEC pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance (e.g., mcr-1 gene identification in APEC), and molecular mechanisms underlying virulence. Recent work examines phylogenetic relationships between human and avian ExPEC strains and the role of FNR in virulence factor regulation.
