Nicolette Lakemond is a Professor at Linköping University in the Department of Economic and Industrial Development (IEI), specifically within the Projects, Innovations and Entrepreneurship (PIE) division. Her academic career at Linköping University spans over two decades, with her promotion to full Professor in Industrial Organization occurring in 2017 after serving as Associate Professor since 2013.
Professor Lakemond's research focuses on the critical intersection of artificial intelligence and organizational management. She investigates how organizations can be led to responsibly contribute to and benefit from the emergence of artificial intelligence and complex intelligent systems. Her work addresses management challenges related to decision-making in AI-dependent systems, organizational design for intelligent technologies, ecosystem collaboration, and methods for taming complexity in increasingly digitized environments. Her research is interdisciplinary, bridging technology, management, and societal considerations while studying critical infrastructure sectors including healthcare, transportation, energy, and finance.
Her recent publications demonstrate a clear trajectory examining tensions, boundaries, and decision-making processes within complex intelligent systems. These works explore how organizations can navigate uncertain AI futures, investigate fluid boundaries across multiple perspectives, and examine situated truth in human-AI collaborative decision-making, particularly in medical contexts. Her research contributes significantly to understanding how organizations can responsibly harness AI benefits while mitigating associated risks in increasingly vulnerable technological infrastructures.
Professor Lakemond leads the NICER (Complex Intelligent Systems and the Management of the Future) research group, which studies future scenarios through demonstration arenas for technology research and industrial demonstrators. Her work is part of the broader WASP (Wallenberg Autonomous Systems Program) Humanities and Society initiative at IEI and TEMA, which examines how AI and autonomous systems affect society and human behavior. She has been actively involved in translating research into practical applications through innovative development programs for small and medium-sized companies and tailor-made AI training for industry partners.
