Nicole Sunday Grove is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, with affiliations in the Department of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, the Hawaiʻi Research Center for Futures Studies, and the International Cultural Studies Program. Her research spans critical security studies, coloniality, data infrastructures, and abolitionist politics.
Her research interests include:
- Critical Security Studies and colonial continuities in data capture
- Abolition as an organizing political ethic
- Politics of affect, aesthetics, and design
- Global infrastructures and planetary surveillance
- Future governance through catastrophe and disruption
- Technopolitics and the libidinal economies of control
Her recent publications explore how security practices reproduce racialized and sexualized vulnerabilities through data, and how apocalypse is being reimagined as a governance strategy. Her book Intimate Capture: Security, Desire and the Coloniality of Computation (under contract with Duke UP) offers a planetary critique of data-driven security. She also leads the ‘Endemic Infrastructures’ research cluster under Security in Context and co-edits International Political Sociology.
Her scientific awards include:
- Fulbright Scholar Award (Middle East and North Africa Regional Research Program)
- CSS Excellence in Teaching Award (2020)
She has advised graduate students and contributed to pedagogical development in political theory and methodology. Her research is supported by international collaborations and fieldwork in the UAE, Qatar, and Lebanon. She is actively involved in shaping critical discourse in global political theory and security studies.
