Nicole Jones

Nicole Jones is a Professor at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the School of Earth and Oceans and the UWA Oceans Institute. Her research focuses on physical oceanography, particularly small-scale processes such as turbulent mixing, internal waves, and ocean eddies. She leads the Western Australia node of Australia’s Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and serves on the Research Advisory Committee of the Marine National Facility. Nicole holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University (2007 and 2002, respectively).

Her work combines field observations and numerical modeling to study ocean dynamics critical for understanding heat, pollutant, and nutrient transport. Recent research highlights include investigations into climate refugia for coral reefs, nonlinear internal wave dynamics, and Earth system model bias correction. Nicole is also committed to advancing STEM leadership for women. Her grants include projects on marine heatwaves, remote sensing techniques, and energy infrastructure transformation. She collaborates widely, with expertise spanning oceanographic measurement methods and environmental fluid mechanics.
