Her commissions, such as David Wallace’s "The Bridgetower" and works by Jessie Cox, Yvette Janine Jackson, and D. J. Sparr, integrate interdisciplinary elements like poetry and social equity. She is also a leader in music outreach and diversity initiatives.
Notable honors include Chamber Music America’s Guarneri String Quartet Award, the Congress of Racial Equality’s MLK JR. Award for Outstanding Arts Achievement, and Texas Tech University’s Paul Whitfield Horn Award. She has secured a $200,000 grant from the Texaco Foundation for a U.S. tour with the Marian Anderson String Quartet.
Dr. Cherry serves on the Texas ASTA Board and has held leadership roles with the Marian Anderson String Quartet Community Music School (2006–2016). Her upcoming projects include a recording of new works with Albany Records and a publication of Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano and Violin, Op. 47, incorporating Bridgetower’s original embellishments.
