Dr. Nicole Beardsworth is a Lecturer in Politics at the University of the Witwatersrand and an Honorary Research Fellow in Politics and International Studies (PAIS) at the University of Warwick. She holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Warwick, an MA in International Relations from Wits, and an MSc in African Studies from the University of Oxford. Her research focuses on political parties, governance, democratisation, and elections in sub-Saharan Africa, with specific emphasis on Southern and Eastern Africa.
Her academic work includes projects funded by the Mellon Foundation, AHRC, and Global Challenges Research Fund. Notable projects include the Zambia Elections Research Network (funded by Warwick's Institute for Advanced Studies) and collaborative research on Ethiopia’s ethno-federal governance structures with Prof. Assefa Fiseha. She has also co-led a £500,000 initiative addressing governance crises in the Horn of Africa.
Dr. Beardsworth’s scholarship bridges theory and practice, employing ethnographic methods and video-based research to explore youth engagement with parliamentary institutions and electoral processes. Her articles and book chapters critically analyze electoral coordination, autocratisation trends, and opposition strategies in Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Ethiopia.
