Nicolas W. Thompson is an Associate Professor and Graduate Director at the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies (SIGS), University of South Florida, since 2015. He previously held the rank of Assistant Professor from 2015 to 2021. His academic journey includes a PhD in Political Science from the University of Oregon (2015), an M.S. (2012), and a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Cruz (2007).
Dr. Thompson’s research bridges U.S. domestic politics and global monetary regimes, focusing on the Federal Reserve System’s evolution and its intersections with political regimes and currency crises. His book, Imagining the Fed (2021), explores the Fed’s institutional development from 1913–1970, emphasizing its technocratic consolidation post-1960s. His work is published in journals like New Political Economy and Economics & Politics.
He teaches undergraduate courses on American government, the presidency, Congress, and foreign policy, as well as graduate seminars on American government and U.S. foreign policy. His awards include grants from the USF Humanities Institute (2017) and the LBJ Foundation (2016).
Nicolas has presented research at conferences such as the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association, addressing topics like central bank structure, monetary policy temporality, and institutional change in global political economy.
