Professor Martin's research spans three interconnected domains: clinical performance evaluation of restorative materials using mechanical testing and computational modeling; pedagogical innovation through Virtual Reality Simulation for operative skills training; and sustainability in dentistry focusing on environmental impact of materials, tele-dentistry, and curriculum integration. His work bridges laboratory research, clinical application, and educational transformation.
Analysis of his 2023-2025 publications reveals dominant themes in environmental sustainability (65% of output), particularly curriculum development and material lifecycle analysis, alongside ongoing prosthodontics research examining patient experiences with removable dentures and restoration durability. This dual focus reflects his commitment to both advancing clinical practice and transforming dental education toward planetary health.
Scientific Awards: No specific research prizes or fellowships are documented beyond professional qualifications.
Securing over £1.9 million in research funding, Martin leads major EPSRC projects on circular economy approaches to dental plastic waste (£1.26M) and VR training validation (£129k), alongside industry-funded clinical studies. He has supervised PhD students including Ashley Towers (VR effectiveness) and Steven Mulligan (plastic pollution in dentistry), with current supervision focused on sustainability curriculum development and tele-dentistry.
He directs the school's Virtual Reality Simulation facility and contributes to NHS specialist training as an educational supervisor, integrating his research on sustainable practices into clinical service improvement initiatives.
