Dr. Upen Patel is an Associate Clinical Professor and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry, University of Birmingham. He serves as Head of Clinical Practice (Academic) and Head of Prosthetic Dentistry (Academic), and was the BDS Programme Director from 2021 to 2024. He is a key figure in dental education, research, and clinical leadership, with extensive national and international engagement.

Dr. Patel's research focuses on therapeutic ultrasound in dental pulp repair, dental tissue regeneration, and saliva as a diagnostic tool. His educational research centers on assessment and feedback systems in clinical dentistry. He is a founding member of the Clinical Assessment and Feedback System (CAFS), widely used in UK and international dental schools.
His recent publications span regenerative dentistry, diagnostic biomarkers, implant prosthetics, and innovative dental education. The works reflect a strong integration of clinical practice, research, and pedagogical innovation, with emphasis on translational outcomes and educational impact.

He serves on national and international committees, including as President of the British Society of Prosthodontics (2025–2026).
He leads research in regenerative dentistry and is developing collaborations to expand work on ultrasound therapies. His lab and team focus on dental pulp cell response to ultrasound, proteomic analysis of saliva, and clinical prosthetic outcomes.
