Nicolas Hirsch is an Associate Professor of Biology and Director of the School of Science & Technology at Hiram College. He holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Neurobiology from the University of California, San Diego, and a B.A. in Biology and Political Science from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on understanding how genetic programs direct the development of complex organs like the brain and eye in vertebrates, particularly using Xenopus and zebrafish as model systems. Key interests include gene regulation during embryogenesis, comparative embryology across species, and the evolution of developmental pathways.
Before joining Hiram, Hirsch held positions at Eastern Connecticut State University and conducted postdoctoral research at institutions including the University of Virginia and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. His work integrates molecular genetics, transgenic technologies, and embryological approaches to study neural and ocular development. He teaches courses such as 'The Science and Ethics of Human Cloning' and coaches Hiram College’s Speech and Debate Team.
His research has been published in journals like Developmental Biology and Zebrafish, focusing on topics such as rax gene function in eye field specification, hoxb1-regulated pathways in hindbrain segmentation, and aldh1a2 roles in pancreas development. While no specific awards are listed, his contributions to developmental biology span over two decades with a strong emphasis on model organism systems.
