Nicolas Hatamiya, DO is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Medicine. He specializes in primary care sports medicine and serves as the Program Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship program at UCSF.
Dr. Hatamiya earned his Bachelor's degree in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley (2010), followed by his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Western University of Health Sciences (2017). He completed his Family Medicine Residency at Stanford Health Care (2020), where he served as chief resident and completed the faculty development track. He then completed a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (2021).
His research interests center on applications of digital health technologies in patient care, point-of-care ultrasound in primary care, and improving musculoskeletal medical education. He has also conducted significant research in biomechanics, exercise physiology, and the impact of social determinants on athletic healthcare access. Dr. Hatamiya's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on sports ultrasound curriculum development, health disparities in athletic training access, sleep patterns in collegiate athletes, and cardiac implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection in athletes.
His research portfolio shows a consistent progression from biomechanics and basic sports medicine topics toward more complex issues involving public health, digital health technologies, and pandemic-related cardiac concerns in athletes. Previously, he served as a team physician for the UCLA Bruins, El Segundo High School, and as assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Dodgers. He is actively involved with professional organizations including the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American College of Sports Medicine, American Academy of Family Physicians, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
