Nicolas D Plachta, Ph.D. is the William Richard Gordon President's Distinguished Professor in Genetics and Scientific Director of the Cell and Developmental Biology Microscopy Core at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on understanding early mammalian embryonic development using advanced live imaging technologies.
Dr. Plachta earned his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and the University of Tel-Aviv (Israel) in 2003, followed by a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 2007.
Dr. Plachta's research interests center on live imaging, mammalian development, single-cell biology, and morphogenesis. His lab uses cutting-edge imaging technologies to study how the early mammalian embryo forms, with a particular focus on revealing how cells choose their fate, shape, and position in real time and in vivo to form a living mammalian organism. His work has made significant contributions to understanding the mechanical and molecular processes underlying embryo development, particularly during the preimplantation stages.
