Nicolas Bianchi is a Lecturer in 20th-century literature at the University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès, specializing in the intersections of literature, press, and history during major conflicts from 1870-1945. His research focuses on World War I literature, trench newspapers, satire, and the relationship between text and image in wartime contexts. He is affiliated with the Patrimoine, Littérature, Histoire (PLH) research unit, which focuses on heritage, literature, and history.
Bianchi's research interests center on the historical poetics of laughter during World War I, as evidenced by his 2021 doctoral thesis titled "The 'Gaîtés' of the Trench. Historical Poetics of the Romantic Laughter of the Great War (1914-1939)." His work examines how literature interacts with other social discourses such as novelistic illustrations, caricature, trench crafts, and cinema. He regularly investigates text-image relationships and develops tools for identifying transmedia poetics and politics of specific historical periods. His research spans French literature, media history, and cultural studies with a particular emphasis on how humor functioned during wartime.
Bianchi's publications reveal a consistent focus on World War I literature and satire, with particular attention to trench newspapers, comic representations of war, and the political dimensions of humor. His work demonstrates expertise in both Francophone and Anglophone war literature, as seen in his 2017 co-edited volume "Writing the Great War." More recently, his 2024 publication "Les Fabriques identitaires de la Grande Guerre" explores artistic representations of self and other from 1914-2018, showing how his research has expanded to consider the long-term cultural legacy of the war. His scholarship bridges literary analysis with historical context, media studies, and cultural theory.
Bianchi has collaborated extensively with scholars including Fabien Meynier, Amélie Chabrier, Toby Garfitt, and Yannick Balant. His work appears in journals such as Textes & Contextes, Cahiers George Sand, and Historia & Guerra, and he has contributed numerous book chapters to edited collections focusing on war literature, satire, and media history. His 2018 textbook "L'Explication de texte aux oraux des concours" demonstrates his commitment to pedagogy and literary analysis methodology.
