Nicolas Balzamo is a Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Neuchâtel's Institute of History. He holds a doctorate from the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, with a thesis on 'Miracle and Society in France (circa 1500–circa 1620)'. His career includes postdoctoral fellowships at Neuchâtel and Rome (La Sapienza) before becoming a senior lecturer and later a full professor in 2024.
His research focuses on religious and cultural history across the modern period, examining theological controversies, cults of images/relics, pilgrimages, miracles, devotional practices, and political aspects of demonic possession. His work bridges microhistory and European perspectives, emphasizing ideas, practices, and their circulation.
