Nicolai J. Foss is a Full Tenured Professor of Strategy and Organization at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), where he also serves as Head of the Department of Strategic Management and Globalization. Additionally, he holds part-time Professorships at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH) and Agder University, and visiting roles at Lund University and Luiss Guido Carli-Roma.
- PhD (1993) and economist (1989) from Copenhagen Business School and University, respectively
His research spans strategic management, theory of the firm, strategic entrepreneurship, and knowledge governance, with a focus on micro-foundations of organizational capabilities, routines, and incentive design. His work integrates Austrian economics and institutional theory into management scholarship.
The trends in his publications emphasize knowledge sharing in networks, goal framing as a behavioral driver, and resource-based theory in dynamic contexts. He has contributed extensively to journals like Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science.

Foss has secured over 2 million Euros in external grants and co-led large-scale projects, including the Norwegian Center for Service Innovation (20 million Euros). He co-founded the Danish Research Unit for Industrial Dynamics and the Center for Policy Studies, and has mentored teams and labs in knowledge governance and strategic entrepreneurship.
