Nicolaas P. Barr is a Part-Time Lecturer and Director of Study Abroad at the University of Washington's Department of Comparative History of Ideas within the College of Arts & Sciences. His work focuses on critical theory, Dutch and German intellectual history, Jewish studies, and postcolonial race relations, with a particular emphasis on antisemitism and white supremacy in European contexts. He holds a Ph.D. in History from UC Berkeley and a B.A. in History/Comparative History of Ideas from the University of Washington.
His research examines the Frankfurt School's analysis of antisemitism and its relevance to contemporary far-right movements in Europe, particularly the Netherlands. He directs a study abroad program in Amsterdam exploring Dutch identity重构 amid debates over national tolerance and racialization. In 2023, he received the Stroum Center's Outstanding Instructor in Jewish Studies Award for his pedagogical contributions.
Barr's publications include a translation of Tofik Dibi's memoir Djinn (SUNY Press, 2021) and articles on Dutch racism in The Nation and Jewish Currents. He also serves as an editor for H-Low Countries and plays trombone in the Mexican band Banda Vagos.
