Nicola Welsh is a Lecturer in Primary Education at the University of Sunderland's School of Education. With over 20 years of experience as a primary school teacher, her current role focuses on training reflective and confident early career teachers. She specializes in English education, emphasizing its role as a foundational life skill, and actively promotes reading and writing development across primary curricula.
As Programme Lead for the PGCE Primary Education with QTS (School Based) and Deputy Programme Lead for other teacher training programs, she oversees course delivery and student mentorship. She leads modules PRIM04 and PRI352 for PGCE students and serves as a University-based Mentor (UBM), supporting trainees during school placements.
Her research interests center on Primary English pedagogy, including vocabulary instruction, reading/writing strategies, and alignment with Ofsted requirements. She has extensive experience as an English coordinator in schools, driving policy implementation and outcomes for pupils from nursery to Year 6.
Nicola is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and supports pedagogical development for colleagues in primary education. She contributes to academic governance as a Personal Academic Tutor across undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
