Nicola Warren is an Associate Professor and Head of the Mayne Academy of Psychiatry at the University of Queensland (UQ). She is also the Queensland Director of Psychiatry Training and Mental Health Course Coordinator for the Medical School. Her roles include leading the Neuropsychiatric Service at Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services, focusing on severe movement disorders, epilepsy, and autoimmune encephalitis. She holds a PhD in psychiatric clinical decision-making from UQ and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.
Dr. Warren’s education includes a Doctor of Philosophy (UQ), a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (James Cook University), and specialized certification in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. Her research spans autoimmune encephalitis, psychiatric decision-making, severe mental illness comorbidities, and innovative medical education strategies.
Her work emphasizes autoimmune encephalitis, particularly anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis, and the intersection of physical health and mental health. Recent publications address topics like clozapine therapy optimization, frailty in severe mental illness, and multimorbidity. She has led national and international guidelines for schizophrenia treatment and contributed to digital health interventions in psychiatry.
Dr. Warren has received awards including the World Psychiatric Association Fellowship (2020) and the RANZCP Early Career Psychiatrist Award (2019). Her research also explores child maltreatment’s long-term mental health impacts and gender equity in academic psychiatry.
