Nicola Mackintosh

Dr. Nicola Mackintosh is a Professor in Social Science applied to Health at the University of Leicester’s Population Health Sciences Department. She holds a background in critical care nursing and graduated from King’s College London. Her research focuses on patient safety, improvement science, and sociological theory. She currently serves as SAPPHIRE Deputy Research Group Lead, advancing studies on safety cultures, digital health technologies, and patient responsibilities in self-care contexts.

Her professional journey includes roles at the NIHR King’s Patient Safety and Service Quality Research Centre, King’s Improvement Science, and the Centre for Implementation Science. She previously explored complication management in maternity and acute care through ethnographic research. Her doctoral work examined the construct of ‘rescue’.

Nicola’s work bridges sociological insights with healthcare practice, emphasizing patient and family contributions to safety. She has a track record in implementation science and digital health innovation.
