Prof. Nicola Fohrer serves as Professor of Water Management and Director of the Institute for Nature and Resource Conservation at Kiel University within the Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences. Her work integrates hydrological science with sustainable landscape management through interdisciplinary research approaches.
Her educational background includes a pre-diploma in agricultural sciences from Technical University of Munich/Weihenstephan (1983-1987), Dipl.-Ing. agr. and M. Sc. Agric. from TU Berlin (1987-1991), doctorate in soil erosion by water from TU Berlin (1995), and habilitation in soil science and landscape management (2002).
Prof. Fohrer specializes in GIS-based hydrological modeling across micro- and mesoscales, land-use change impacts on river basins, aquatic ecological methods, and nutrient retention systems. Her research develops pedotransfer functions for regionalizing environmental characteristics and creates integrated landscape function models that address erosion control and water protection challenges through interdisciplinary frameworks.
She received the German Hydrology Prize in 2021 for her contributions to hydrological science.
Prof. Fohrer has coordinated significant research projects including a DFG project on 'Dynamics of surface siltation on loess soils' and managed subprojects in Collaborative Research Centre 299. She served as Managing Director of the Kiel Ecology Center (2004-2005) and acts as guest reviewer for leading journals including Agricultural Water Management and Hydrology and Earth System Sciences.
