Dr. Nicola Evans is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Wollongong’s School of the Arts, English and Media, part of the Faculty of the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford, and an MA and PhD in Communication Theory and Research from the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor at Indiana University and a Postgraduate Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication Research.
Her research focuses on media and cultural representations of identities (human and nonhuman), with a particular emphasis on human-animal relations, gender in film and literature, and emerging digital media forms like web series. As a Chief Investigator on an ARC Linkage grant (2020–2025), she leads a comparative study on gender’s role in career trajectories and web series across Australia, France, and Canada. She is fluent in French and German.
Dr. Evans supervises PhD and Master’s research in areas such as digital media, screen studies, and cultural analysis. Her work has been published in journals like International Journal of Communication and Cinema Studies, and she co-edited the book literary careers in the modern era (2016). She is actively involved in higher-degree research supervision, overseeing projects on topics ranging from web series festivals to ecocritical literature.
