Prof. Nico Roijmans is a full Professor of Northwest European Archaeology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam since 1998, affiliated with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Art and Culture, History, Antiquity. His research focuses on Late Iron Age societies, Roman integration of Celto-Germanic groups, ethnicity in the Roman Empire, and archaeology of mass violence. Since 2016, he directs the Portable Antiquities in the Netherlands project to systematically register small metal finds in private collections.
He has directed 8 major research projects, supervising 17 PhD theses. His work bridges archaeology with historical analysis, emphasizing frontier zones and societal dynamics. Notable contributions include studies on Roman conquest impacts, Celtic-Germanic societies, and material culture analysis.
Scientific awards include the Bulthuis van Oosternieland Prize for Best Dissertation (1991) and Huibregtsenprijs voor Wetenschap en Samenleving (2010). He actively participates in academic networks, organizing conferences like the annual Romeinensymposium and delivering lectures on Roman frontiers and mass violence.
Research interests span interdisciplinary approaches to antiquity, with a focus on the Rhine-Meuse region, Roman military strategies, and societal resilience under imperial expansion. His work integrates numismatic evidence, burial practices, and settlement patterns to reconstruct ancient socio-political landscapes.
