Dr. Nico Pizzolato is a Professor and Director of Postgraduate Research Studies at Middlesex University’s Research Knowledge Transfer Office. He holds a PhD from University College London and has lectured at institutions including Queen Mary University of London and the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on labor history, social theory, and critical pedagogy, with a particular emphasis on coerced labor practices, global capitalism, and workplace democracy. He is the author of Challenging Global Capitalism: Labor Migration, Radical Struggle, and Urban Change in Detroit and Turin and co-editor of Gramsci: A Pedagogy to Change the World. His work has been published in journals like American Historical Review and Labor History.
As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Pizzolato oversees postgraduate research governance and development at Middlesex, supervising 16 doctoral candidates in the DProf (Transdisciplinary) program. He is also a seminar convenor at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London. His research extends to digital learning’s role in adult education and interdisciplinary approaches to labor studies.
Key awards include Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy and Royal Historical Society. Recent work includes studies on modern slavery, platform labor, and the intersection of EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) in postgraduate research. His pedagogical contributions include writing workshops and advocating for transdisciplinary research practices in professional doctorates.
