Dr. Amy Blier-Carruthers is a Senior Lecturer in Music Performance Education at King’s College London and a Teaching Fellow in Higher Education within the same institution. She also holds a Lecturer position in Postgraduate Studies at the Royal Academy of Music (University of London). Her dual career combines academic research with violin performance and pedagogy. She completed her undergraduate studies in Music at King’s College London alongside violin training at the Royal Academy of Music, followed by a PhD at King’s College London supported by an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award.
Her research focuses on classical music performance practices, particularly recording studio dynamics and live performance analysis. She has led major AHRC-funded projects including the 'Classical Music Hyper-Production' study and contributed to the 'Performance in the Studio' network. Notable collaborations include reconstructing historic recordings with the Science Museum and exploring conductor Sir Charles Mackerras’ creative processes through ethnographic methods.
Blier-Carruthers’ publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles examining technology’s impact on performance, studio aesthetics, and interdisciplinary methodologies. She co-authored Walking Cities: London (2020) and is completing From Stage to Studio (2021), analyzing performance vs. recording practices. Her teaching includes pioneering the Professional Diploma in Collaborative Recording Production at the Royal Academy of Music.
Professional roles include membership in the Institute of Musical Research steering committee, AHRC peer review, and involvement with the Cambridge Centre for Musical Performance Studies. She actively promotes EDI initiatives through the EDIMS Network and has presented globally at institutions like Princeton University and the Smithsonian Institution. Her work bridges historical musicology, performance practice, and modern recording technologies.
