Nico Perdrial is an Associate Professor at the University of Vermont (UVM) within the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Geography and Geosciences. He serves as the Director of the X-Ray Laboratory and teaches courses such as Environmental Geology, Earth System Science, Geocomputing, and Extraterrestrial Life. His research integrates high-precision aqueous geochemistry and advanced spectroscopic techniques to study molecular-scale processes in bio/geo systems, focusing on contaminant fate and environmental disturbances.
Education:
- Ph.D., Université Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France (2007)
- M.S., Université de Paris XI - Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris, France (2003)
- B.S., Université de Nantes, France (2001)
Research Interests: Nico’s work centers on low-temperature geochemistry and environmental mineralogy. His expertise spans mineral transformation mechanisms, contaminant transport (e.g., Pb in soils), nanoscale-to-macroscale weathering dynamics, and paleoclimate reconstruction using micromineralogy. He employs tools like HRTEM, XAS, SEM, XRD, XRF, and GIS to bridge atomic-scale processes with field-scale environmental solutions.
Current Projects: His research includes (i) lead remediation in soils, (ii) multiscale weathering mechanisms, and (iii) sub-glacial paleo-stratigraphy. He also collaborates on geochemical responses to environmental disturbances.
Teaching: Courses taught include Environmental Geology, Earth System Science, Geocomputing, and Extraterrestrial Life, emphasizing hands-on learning, multidisciplinary integration, and real-world environmental challenges.
Labs and Teams: As Director of the X-Ray Laboratory, Nico oversees advanced analytical resources critical to his multiscale research approach.
