Niclas Scott Bentsen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in forestry and bioresources. His research focuses on quantifying biomass resources, optimizing resource allocation, and evaluating the climate impacts and sustainability of bioenergy systems.
His research interests center on four main areas:
- Biomass resources - Quantification and characterization of biomass from agriculture and forestry at various scales
- Resource allocation - Optimizing biomass distribution for maximum utility with minimal negative impacts
- Climate impacts of bioenergy - Analyzing GHG emissions, carbon sequestration potential, and indirect economic effects
- Sustainability of bioenergy - Assessing environmental, social, and economic impacts using LCA, lifecycle thinking, and Material Flow Analysis
His recent publications (2023-2025) reveal a strong focus on circular forest economies, wood flow analysis, carbon accounting methodologies, and climate neutrality pathways. His work frequently employs material flow analysis and lifecycle assessment to evaluate sustainability metrics across different bioresource utilization scenarios.
Bentsen actively engages in academic and public discourse through 106 recorded activities including invited lectures, conference participation, and panel discussions on topics like forest resources for climate mitigation, sustainable supply chains, and biomass utilization challenges. His research demonstrates strong collaboration with colleagues across the Nordic region and internationally.
