Niclas Franzén is an Assistant Professor of Art History and Doctoral Student in History at Linköping University, jointly affiliated with the Department of Culture and Society (IKOS) and Department of History, Art History and Religious Studies (HKR). His interdisciplinary work examines how historical and religious concepts manifest in visual culture.
Research focuses primarily on:
- Symbolist and esoteric traditions in Nordic art during the turn of the 20th century
- Apocalyptic imagery across historical and contemporary contexts
- Artistic interpretations of religious symbolism
- Cultural radicalism in 19th-century European art scenes
Recent publications (2019-2023) demonstrate consistent analysis of Nordic artists like Ivar Arosenius and Hugo Simberg, exploring themes of anarchism, loneliness, domesticity, and esotericism through art-historical and cultural lenses.
Actively contributes to the interdisciplinary research hub LiU Hub for Apocalyptic and Post-Apocalyptic Imaginations, investigating apocalyptic traditions in politics, media, and art. No advising relationships or scientific awards are documented.
