Nicky Witton serves as Senior Lecturer and Director of Apprenticeships at Keele University's School of Nursing and Midwifery since her 2022 promotion and 2023 appointment. With over 15 years in higher education since 2008, she pioneered Keele's first apprenticeship program (FDSc Nursing Associate) and the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner pathway, while developing national critical care education frameworks through CC3N collaboration.
Her educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies, Post Graduate Diploma in Education, and specialized intensive care training for adults and children. She currently pursues a Doctorate in Education examining critical care nurses' clinical practice longevity.
Research centers on moral distress impacts in critical care environments, curriculum innovation, and competency standardization. Her work addresses nurse retention challenges through environmental analysis and educational restructuring, with strong emphasis on translating clinical experience into academic frameworks.
Recent publications reveal dual research trajectories: establishing evidence-based national competency standards (particularly maternal critical care specializations) and investigating moral distress as a primary retention determinant among critical care nurses.
- Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
Witton leads national initiatives including the Critical Care National Nurse Leads (CC3N) competency frameworks and trailblazer groups for occupational standards. Her apprenticeship development work spans multiple healthcare disciplines, focusing on bridging clinical practice with academic credentialing through innovative program structures.
